A Little About Us

The Station itself is rich in history. It was first leased by the Russell family in 1847, and included an estate of approximately 10,000 acres. With his crown grants and leasehold land, John Russel began farming his 2 acres with just 3 men, 3 horses, and 1,000 sheep, for the rental sum of 24 pounds. Captain Bob Russell’s schooner (a type of sailing vessel) was then used to transport the collected wool to Wellington.

I loved every bit of this experience, even the drive to the station is beautiful, along rocky coastline. Glenda was welcoming and helpful from the time I booked until the time I left, it was a comfort to know she was available by radio if needed while I was up at the hut. The hut itself was warm and cozy with a well-equipped kitchen, everything I needed and more. What a luxury to be sitting on the porch with a hot drink, watching the weather change over the hills, or to come back to the hut after a day exploring and light the fire. I could have stayed longer......

This was a fantastic place to go for a long weekend get away. The space in the place was perfect for our family and we enjoyed using the facilities. We were able to do some great day walks in the area and then return to the comforts of home. We enjoyed the bbq and the fire. We would definitely recommend this as a place to try.

We had such a great experience staying at Glenda's place on their land, which is absolutely stunning. River crossings, mountains and this lovely hut is all you need ???? Only feedback I can think of is to mark the track better, since we got lost twice (apparently there are different white signs everywhere, haha!). Thankfully Glenda helped us get back and picked us up! The hut is lovely and has all facilities, even pillows and a bit of food. We'd love to stay again ????
