The deposit is non-refundable, but is transferable for one season if your booking is cancelled within 2 weeks prior to your arrival. Final payment is then to be made on 1 week before commencing the walk by credit card or bank transfer.

Why Choose An Independent Walking Holiday?

Independent walking holidays give you maximum flexibility as you can travel at your own pace. You get to set off at your own convenience, choose where and when to stop for meals, and plan the day around your own personal schedule. All whilst enjoying our coprehensive maps and walking notes, with details of walking times and distances.

When Are Your Self-Guided Walking Holidays Available?

October through to April each year. Refer to “Price & Booking ” tab to check on the exact date of availability.

Where Will I Stay?

There are three locations at Kawakawa Station – Kawakawa Cottage, Jakeb’s Cabins, and the Purple Hut.

What’s Included In My Holiday?

Accomodation for 3 nights, plus all meals.
A walk briefing.
Luggage transportation between accomodation venues (one modest-sized backpack per person), to save you carrying all that weight.
2 course evening meal (main and dessert for all three days)
Breakfast and lunch provisions.
Morning and afternoon tea.
Sheets, pillows and pillow cases

What’s Not Included In My Holiday Package?

Personal items, alcoholic beverages, and sleeping bags.

Am I Fit Enough, And How Much Walking Is Involved?

Generally, the walk includes 5-6 hours walking (including several stops in order to take in the spectacular views) for the first 2 days, some of which is pretty steep, and a relaxed 2-4 hours walking on the 3rd and final day, on mainly flat ground.

Do You Offer Specialist Interest Walking Holidays?

Not currently.

How Do You Look After Your Safety While On Holiday?

Upon arrival, you will be given a 2-way radio with which to communicate with the Kawakawa Station team, and are required to call in when you arrive at your night’s accomodation and once again when you are setting off in the morning.

What Is The Accommodation Like?

On the first night you will be staying at Kawakawa Cottag, a bunk bed accomodation with large open-plan living/dining/kitchen area and a good-sized bathroom.

On the 2nd night you will be staying at Jakeb’s Cabins. There are bunk beds in each of the 3 chalet-style cabins, with a separate toilet, bathroom and kitchenette.

Finally, on the 3rd night you will be staying at the Purple Hut, a former hunting hut with bunk beds, large living/dining space, and a separate bathroom with shower.

What Are The Meals Like?

The meals are prepared at home and are composed of the freshest local produce. They are generously portioned out and then transported to each accomodation venue, ready for you to heat up or BBQ at the end of your walk.

Are Your Holidays Suitable For Single Travellers?

Our holidays are not suitable for single walkers owing to Health and Safety concerns.

Can I Book A Tailor-Made Extension To My Holiday?

Absolutely. There is plenty to do and see in the Cape Palliser area. Speak to our hospitality manager Glenda, to check on availability of B&B accomodation on your preferred dates.

What Do I Need To Take?

You will need to bring comfortable walking boots or walking shoes (complete with tread); day pack; generously-sized lunchbox; 1-2 litre water bottle; hat; camera; sun cream and insect repellent; towel; warm and cool clothing; a waterproof jacket; sleeping bag; (alcoholic drinks optional)

I’d Like To Bring My Family. Are These Holidays Suitable For Under 16s?

Yes, as long as the children enjoy hiking and can walk for 6 hours unaided.

Will There Be Any Opportunities To Swim?

There will not be any opportunities to swim during the walk itself, but on the day you arrive or leave you can swim in the sea, weather permitting. The beach is easily accessible – a 10-15 minute walk from yoru first night’s accomodation.

Is There Anywhere To Buy Petrol At Cape Palliser?

No. Please fill up in Featherston or Martinborough. Fuel is also available in Pirinoa, but it is very expensive!

When And Where Is The Walk Briefing?

The walk briefing is at the Kawakawa Cottage at 7.00pm.

Will I have any free time?

Depending on how fast you walk and what time you set off in the morning, you ought to have plenty of free time.

What are the washing facilities like?

A shared bathroom with shower, hot & cold water.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?


What meals are provided?

I’m a vegetarian/have a special diet, can you cater for this?

Absolutely. Just let us know at the time of booking.

We provide you with a map.

End of October to the end of April.

Can I bring my dog with me?

Unfortunately not, seeing as Kawakawa Station is a working sheep and beef farm.

How far ahead do I need to book my holiday?

We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly during the public holidays and between December and February.

How do I book my walking holiday?

You can book your online walking holiday online on the Kawakawa website.

How do I pay for my walking holiday?

A deposit will be paid online to reserve dates.

Do you offer group discounts?

No currently. Howver, we grantee you with a spectacular experience here at Kawakawa Station and that would make your trip worth every penny for sure.

Can I change the dates of my walking holiday after I have booked?

Yes, but only at certain times of the year. We do get booked up in advance so your preferred dates may not be available.

What happens if I have to cancel my holiday?

Should you for any reason cancel your holiday, we will give you a credit for the full amount, valid for 12 months.

Is there any cell phone coverage?

There is limited coverage from the high points, however we suggest you organise yourself to be incommunicado as coverage is not guaranteed. You are welcome to use our home phone if you are desperate. You can leave Glenda’s number (+64 278 156 523,) with family members if need be.
